Officially designated the Commonwealth of Virginia (after Elizabeth 1, the "Virgin Queen") and familiarly known as the "Old Dominion," one of the 13 original states of the United States, being the 10th to ratify the Constitution (1788). It is the southernmost of the Middle Atlantic states, roughly triangular in shape, bounded on the north by West Virginia and Maryland, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, on the south by North Carolina and Tennessee, and on the west by Kentucky. Its total area is 40,767 sq. mi. (105,716 sq. km.), of which 976 sq. mi. (2,528 sq. km.) are inland water; in size it ranks 36th among the states. The state flag has a blue field in the center of which the state coat of arms is represented. The flower is the dogwood; the bird, the cardinal; the state song, "Carry Me Back to Old Virginia," was retired by the General Assembly in 1997; as of yet, no replacement song has been chosen.
